About St. Mark's
Old Roman Catholic Church
A Haven . . .
Invariably,
first-time visitors to our church remark that "the minute you
walk in, you sense there's something special about it", a welcoming,
peaceful and prayful atmosphere they don't find in sterile assembly
halls currently in vogue in church architecture. We always smile,
pleased that St. Mark's succeeds in providing a refuge from
the secular world, an intimate space in which to encounter the
Lord Jesus, to kneel in worship and supplication amidst the
beauty of the Tridentine Mass and Gregorian chant, then to rise,
strengthened by His Spirit.
A Family in Christ
. . .
Because
we are a small and familial faith community, our ministry to
our parishioners is a genuinely personal one. We we don't have
committees, hold dances or sponsor raffles, but before and after
Mass, the parish house serves as a gathering place for all who
enjoy lively conversation about the religious, moral and cultural
issues of the day. Spiritual assistance is but a phone call
(or a phone message) away. In keeping with the Gospel, St.Mark's
also offers temporal assistance (emergency financial aid and
food provision) through the Society of St. Mark, the religious
and charitable institute of the Diocese of Michigan and the
Central States. We also participate in the charitable programs
of Southwest Community Ministries and South Louisville Community
Ministries, and Eastern Area Community Ministries.
A Cradle Of the Future
. . .
Many
parents, understandably, have deep concerns about the moral
decline of our culture, and the failure of our schools and even
many Churches to teach children basic values, right and wrong.
At St. Mark's, we have rediscovered the incomparable wisdom
of the Baltimore Catechism, employing it to help children from
right conscience, grow strong in the faith, and prepare for
sacraments. This wonderful text imbues youngsters with true
self-esteem (as opposed to the false kind that results when
adults fail in their responsibility to lovingly correct, guide
and enlighten) because it identifies them as precious children
of the Father, and sets them on a path toward fulfilling, Godly
lives.
